Achill Golf Club is proud to congratulate our very own Julie Hassett on her outstanding victory in the Connacht Women’s O18 Junior Championship – her second time lifting the coveted trophy, having previously won the title in 2021.
Julie carded a round of 85 to clinch the championship once more, despite a testing start which saw her double-bogey the first hole. Demonstrating remarkable composure and grit, she recovered in style with a steady run of pars between the 11th and 15th holes, pulling away from her closest challengers, Rita Keane (Newlands) and Siobhán Forde (Gort), who finished second and third respectively.
On top of her overall win, Julie also secured the Best Net prize in the Junior section with a brilliant score of four under par (-4).
Speaking after her win, Julie reflected on the challenges of the day:
“It was nicer to win the second time around because I didn’t start off very well, I came back in the afternoon,” she said.
“My trolley broke on the third hole. The nice gentleman, Darren, came out with a new trolley for me. I just settled down, it stopped raining as well – that helps.
I’ll really enjoy this one and you never know, maybe more to come.”
Achill Lady Captain, Karen Lyons paid tribute to Julie’s win, saying:
“We’re all incredibly proud of Julie – she showed real determination and heart out there. It’s a great moment for her and for Achill Golf Club.”
Julie’s resilience, determination, and sportsmanship are a shining example to young golfers across the province and beyond. Achill Golf Club is delighted to celebrate this tremendous achievement, and we look forward to many more successes from Julie in the years ahead.
